After nearly two years during an interesting time in Melbourne, I am back in Dubai to attend the expo2020 and catch up with friends in the region.
I spent ten years of my life in this region and was lucky to have visited all the Arab countries. I have learned about oil and the then and still marginally important contribution to today’s global economy while working for Kuwait oil company.
During my years in the UAE, I came to the conclusion that education was and still remains to be the shortest pathway to economic and human development for the Arab world. My earlier thoughts on the contribution of education are now confirmed with my visit to Dubai Expo2020. More on this after my visit to Abu Dhabi soon.
I was overwhelmed and could not handle the information overload during my first day at the expo2020. It is massive, fascinating, and will probably need more time than I planned for this. There are three themes; sustainability, mobility, and opportunity. And my plan was to visit each theme for a day, and it is now clear that I will probably need a few days for each area. The following is a brief tour of earlier World expo events.
And now… Dubai!
I am working on a project about issues related to Somalia and could not resist visiting the Somali site at the expo2020. This was an opportunity to showcase Somalia and engage the world and was expecting a huge delegation and representatives from the country or embassy, etc. This was not the case, and I am very disappointed! However, I met very motivated young volunteers who inspired me with their enthusiasm and energy. With this young generation, there is hope for Somalia. See this clip below… comments, feedback welcome.
