Somalia and Kenya after the ICJ Ruling
Can the ICJ enforce its own ruling? If not why bother with International law? or UN?
Yesterday I posted a brief note on this issue without any comments, see https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6853911802720481280/ . This has generated a lot of discussions and heated debate among the African community in Australia and elsewhere in the diaspora.
Here are further details on the same issue, and I refrain from commenting, but just keeping a chronology of the events that may lead to unintended consequences. After 7 years, the ICJ produced this 77 pages verdict, please continue to read after page 77 ... the SEPARATE OPINION OF JUDGE YUSUF who used to be the former president of the ICJ… https://www.linkedin.com/posts/mi2000_somalia-v-kenya-verdict-separate-opinion-activity-6854182328386904064-DtkV
Here is a response from Kenya’s president: https://www.president.go.ke/2021/10/13/statement-by-h-e-hon-uhuru-kenyatta-cgh-president-of-the-republic-of-kenya-and-commander-in-chief-of-the-defence-forces-on-the-international-court-of-justice-judgement-in-maritime-delimitation-ca/
President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya presides the UN security council the very day when Kenya rejects the ICJ’s verdict. And Somalia is not happy either with this verdict.
I have no words to describe this… note the president is introduced and there were supposed to be no questions after his remarks. What happened?
There is no word for irony in Somali or Kiswahili….
